USB peripherals

Hi there.

I want to preface this all with the fact that I am a big n00b in everything I am talking about in this, so general solutions that the normal person should be able to follow may be over my head.

Sorry about that.

Anyways, my question is if there is a way for a Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Win 7 PC to take immediate control of plugged in USB peripherals instead of them first going through the actual Win 7 computer.

The reason that I ask is because I am running some shell scripts in Ubuntu that communicate with a usb device that is only accesible for less than a second.

The computer only recognizes the device for literally less than a second, and Ubuntu is supposed to be able to push commands to it, but there isn't enough time for it to connect.

So I was wondering if there was a way to bypass usb interfaces going through Win7 first, and going straight to Ubuntu?

Thank you anyone who helps.
