Please guys, I could really use some help. Even after RTFM, I haven't felt like this much of a noob in fifteen years.
I had an long lost IT guy preach to me the wonders of virtualization and I saw the light. So 2 years later, I'm ready to give it a try on my first production server. I've successfully done a couple practice runs in development but I can't replicate exactly what I'll experience when I do it in production. Specifically network related.
I'm converting a VM supported Dell PowerEdge T620 from physical to virtual. Right now the physical server has a production Oracle database. It has 2 physical NICs, 1 connected directly to the internet and 1 connected to the internal LAN. I'm going to use VMConverter and dump the contents of the server to another machine, install VM ESXi 5.1 on the server, and dump the contents from the original server back into a newly created VM. I will then create a second VM for use as a file server. I've tested this on a seperate machine with no problems EXCEPT..... the network settings. What the heck am I doing?
I think (scary) what I need is 1 physical NIC w/ 3 internal IPs (192.168.0.28 - original Oracle IP, now VM1), (192.168.0.29 - new fileserver VM2), (192.168.0.30 - VM management). The other physical NIC should have just the Internet IP address (24.23.x.x) and only be available to VM1 since only the Oracle DB needs to be accessed from the internet.
Does this sound right and how the heck do I configure it? I went through the Network Guides but I'm more confused than ever with port groups, distributed switches, standard switches, etc. Do I even need to go down that road? My head hurts.
Thanks for any help. It's really appreciated.
