There is no Admin UI and no vSphere UI with the Windows install - that is only available with the vApp.

Re: Persona Management - Redirected Desktop Folder

They are in the same location at the moment; a "virtualdesktop" folder in the users home folder (Redirected Desktop Folder = \\server\home\username\virtualdesktop\Desktop and the profile folder = \\server\home\username\virtualdesktop\username.v2). I thought the same myself about someone resetting permissions, but I am not very sure. My colleagues does not work with the users home folders or any of the View stuff and our users are not savvy enough to reset permissions on a folder like this situation. And if so, why did the rest of the users home folder or profile folder not lose their permissions. I had to take ownership of the Desktop folder and then reset the permissions from parent to child. The other thing, I mentioned the link clone users and full clone users. The full clone users are all Domain Admins. The link clone users are only standard users (no administrative rights). I understand that standard users can still change permissions of files/folders that they have full control and ownership of.

Going back over my change logs, the only thing I can think of is maybe a folder quota change. We have quota enforcement on the user's home folders. I increased the quota on the home folders last week. Maybe this could have done something weird with that?

Hi,

I use Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services (64-bit) V10.50, downloaded directly from MS, and vCO 5.1.0 .

Thanks for your help, Woody. I'll give the GParted software a go after lunch.

That link is dead by the way.

My "backups" are just copies of the .vmwarevm file on another hard drive.

Re: WinXP VM failed to start after installing Linux VM

Hi WoodyZ

Thanks for your answer.

I Totally understand the ifrst part of your answer, however - this excatly what happened.

One mintue the VM in up and running ans after installing the Linux VM - it can not be loaded.

Because it happened something like 3 weeks ago - I might be wrong...Is it possible that a player update was required to support the linux machine?

Maybe all it was is installing the VMware Tools

Are the VMware tools installed on  the VM level, or is it at the player level - that is, it is common to all VM on a given host?

As for the second part of your answer you probably right... the message is:

Bad Image (error code c000007b)

The Application or DLL \??\c:\windows\system32\DGI32.dll is not a valid windows iamge. Please check this against your installtion diskette.

Hi Juan,

Can you attach an agent.log of one of the hq agent (<hq_agent_home>/logs) and server.log ?

Thanks

I think this will be a tough one to track down and I don't see how quotas would change permissions.   We have used quotas for a awhile and we are always increasing and I can't ever remember a permissions issue as a result.

The only time we have had issues is when an admin propagated permissions from a top level on our persona repository.    That was a painful experience.

Ohhhh ok.  Now that makes sense.  I was on someones blog where they were saying both the ESXi and OS had to be running on the same machine so that's where I was confused.  So I install the vSphere client on my local machine or another windows server and connect to the new ESXi server from that client?  Where do I get that vSphere client from?

Thanks,

Neil

I hope you made a proper* backup before doing anything!

If you cannot extend the partition from within Windows then you'll need to boot the VM with GParted Live ISO Image (download gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486.iso) and extend it that way.  BTW you'll need to temporarily remove the USB Controller from the Virtual Machine or you'll have mouse tracking issue while booted from GParted Live.

I fixed the link.

My "backups" are just copies of the .vmwarevm file on another hard drive.

That's fine providing the Virtual Machine was shutdown, not suspended, and VMware Fusion closed when you made the copy.

Re: Do Mac OS X upgrades work with my VMWare Fusion?

Upgrading/uninstalling/reinstalling does not remove any Virtual Machines you've created, just like doing the same with about every other application it typically does not remove the "work product" thereof.  Like upgrading/uninstalling/reinstalling Microsoft Office it doesn't remove the documents you've created and you can open and use them in the newer version.  Obviously with VMware Fusion there are some major virtual hardware differences between v2.x and v5.x so to get the most out of the upgrade you should be prompted to upgrade the virtual hardware when running the older version Virtual Machine in the newer version VMware Fusion and you should allow it.

That said, before doing anything make sure you have proper* backups of your Virtual Machines you upgrade and Time Machine is not considered a proper backup for Virtual Machine.

Re: Update from mac OS.X 10.5.8 to mac OS.X 10.6 with VMware fusion 2.0.2

Looking at the Supported Guest and Host Operating Systems in the Compatibility Guides it shows that last supported 2.x version is 2.0.6 under Mac OS X 10.6.1 however assuming you'd be running the latest Mac OS X 10.6.8 it show 4.0 as the oldest version supported.  So obviously upgrading to VMware Fusion 5 is what you'd probably end up doing if you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8.

That said, you's still be able to use your existing Virtual Machines although for best performance the virtual hardware version should be allowed to be updated by VMware Fusion 5.x when first run.  Also be sure to make proper* backups of your Virtual Machine's before doing anything.

Ok... I found the vsphere download.  I just went to http://[the server ip where i installed ESXi] and it took me to the download page.  I'll let you know if I can get it going from here.

Thanks,

ESX 4.0 incorrectly detects cores as physical cpus

$

Gentlemen

I recently installed ESX 4.0 on a BL685cG7 with the below configuration.

AMD 6200 with 4 physical Sockets * 8 cores = 32 cores

128GB RAM

There were no issues during the installation. However, ESX 4.0 incorrectly detects as 8 Physical CPUs with 4 cores each instead of

4 PCPUs with 8 cores each. This doubles the required license count.

cat /proc/cpuinfo shows only processor #0. There is nothing much available there.

Any ideas please?

I know this server is not listed in Hardware Compatibility list for ESX 4.0. I am still curious to know how this would make ESX to read

sockets as cores and cores as sockets.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you!

I agree, this could be a tough one to figure out. I do not expect to see resolution as I have already worked through and corrected the permissions. Just raising the flag in case it comes up again for someone else. Hopefully it does not and this is an issue internally to us.

Thanks
